Quinta da Fonte Souto
In Detail
Quinta da Fonte Souto, located in the Portalegre subregion of Alto Alentejo in southern Portugal, represents an exciting new addition to the family’s portfolio outside the Douro region. Spanning 207 hectares, the estate benefits from its elevation near the São Mamede range (1,025 meters), which provides a cooler microclimate compared to the typically hot and dry conditions of the Alentejo. The schist and granite soils here are less fertile but contribute to the production of distinctive and high-quality wines.
The property includes 43 hectares of vineyards with a selection of principal grape varieties such as Aragonês, Alfrocheiro, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It also features a notable chestnut grove, from which its name is derived—‘souto’ refers to a wooded area planted with chestnut trees. Additionally, Quinta da Fonte Souto has a large forested area, with 100 hectares of which one-third is covered with cork oaks, enhancing the traditional Alentejo landscape.
The estate’s inaugural vintage in 2017 was well-received, showcasing the benefits of its altitude, which ranges from 490 to 550 meters. The debut wines, released in 2019, included both white and red varieties, reflecting the unique terroir of Quinta da Fonte Souto.
