Largo da Ponte D. Luiz, 1, 4400-111, Vila Nova de Gaia - Porto and Douro
In 1750, Henry Burmester and John Nash started the exportation of
Port wines to Europe and England.
The new Burmester Museum Wine Cellars, built in a privileged place overlooking the Douro River, besides the historic bridge D. Luis I, emerge with the clear ambition of make known a little more of the history of the brand Burmester.
In 1750, just before the demarcation of the Douro wine region, the brand Burmester, producer of Port and Douro DOC wines, was born. The origins of the brand date back to London, in 1730, when Henry Burmester and John Nash founded Burmester& Nash. Currently, this brand belongs to Sogevinus, having acquired it in 2005.
Next to the bridge D. Luis I, the new Burmester visitor centre, could not have chosen a more privileged environment. The cellars, built in the end of the 18th century, kept the original architecture almost unchanged, with a darkened wooden beams ceiling and granite walls, greenish by the time, draining humidity; a water mine goes on inside.
The freshness we feel and light are, after all, the ideal conditions for a wine cellar, resembling cells, where Port wines are kept and where you can meet the first Burmester oak barrel, dated of 1883.
A small museum keeps some of the machines that were used for bottling, labelling and filling, taking us back to other times. You can always enjoy a Port wine tasting and the opportunity of walk through to the store that has a large selection of Burmester wines.
The Reception Room, where usually the cocktails before lunch or dinner are served, is a space where guests may move around, contacting closely with the tradition and charm of the Port wine cellars.
The Lunch Room, a room contiguous to the dining room, where smaller events can be hold, serving also as a support space to the reception room (dance floor, bar, fruit and desserts tables).
The Dining Room, with capacity for 180 people is intended for company parties, weddings, birthday and other parties. The room is equipped with air conditioning and sound system.
Multifunctional area located in the main cellar and intended to different types of events such as exhibitions, cocktails or dinners. In the cellars besides the bridge D. Luis I - "Cellars of the Bridge" - concerts, weddings and other cultural, social and business events are often held.
Placed in an area of the cellars where Port wine used to age in the barrels in the old days. Has capacity for 20 people and is equipped with the latest technologies, offering a perfect quality and functionality to these events. The room has multimedia projectors, plasma screens, an audio system and 3 translation rooms.
The Meeting Room has a capacity for 26 people and has a support living area.
The terrace has a magnificent view over the Douro River, has a strong private character and capacity for 20 people.
