QUINTA DO VALLADOQUINTA DO VALLADO

Quinta do Vallado, built in 1716, is one of the oldest and most famous Quintas of the Douro Valley.

Quinta do Vallado welcomes its guest in its comfortable Wine Hotel since 2005. It belonged to the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira and remains to this day as the property of her descendants. It is located on the banks of the River Corgo, a tributary of the Douro River, right next to the river mouth near the town of Peso da Régua. For nearly 200 years the Quinta do Vallado was primarily engaged in the production of Port wine, subsequently marketed by Casas Ferreira (that belonged to the Family). After Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, her great-grandson - Jorge Viterbo Ferreira, and her great-great-grandson - Jorge Cabral Ferreira - were responsible for the great development and growth of the Quinta.

In Detail
Quinta do Vallado consists of two buildings with different settings that combine tradition and modernity, a compound that was built and designed inspired by the Douro wine environment. It has 13 rooms; 5 bedrooms in the historic building of the Quinta - built in 1733 and recently restored - and 8 rooms in the new building, built in 2012 and designed by the Architect Francisco Vieira de Campos that used mainly schist in this work.

The interiors stand out by the references to Nordic vintage furnishings that share this space with national materials, in a well-designed harmony. The several fireplaces in the living rooms and the swimming pool strategically placed on the hillside facing the river Corgo are ab invitation for moments of relaxation and leisure, accompanied by the nectar that gives fame to the Quinta.

The 70 ha. (172 ac.) of the Quinta do Vallado vineyards are mostly based on the slopes of schist soil, facing south and west, allowing an optimal maturation of the grapes, profiting from the Mediterranean climate.

With 50 ha. (123 ac.) of vines aged between 11 and 18 years and 20 ha. (49 ac.) of the best vines with more than 80 years, Quinta do Vallado and Quinta do Vallado and its leaders, João Ferreira Álvares Ribeiro, Francisco Ferreira (responsible for the farm management) and Francisco Olazabal (oenologist), all descendent of Dona Antónia, have reached a very high level, recognized by several national and international entities.

The new vines were planted in clearly defined areas, breaking with the tradition of blending the different grape varieties in the same plot.
The predominant varieties are: Red (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Barroca, Tinta Amarela and Sousão) and whites (Viosinho, Rabigato, Moscatel, Verdelho (Gouveio) and Arinto in whites).
The old vine is planted in a continuous pattern of 1,2 m x1,0 m, cultivated in accordance with the curves of the terrain. It has more than 40 grape varieties, predominantly Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Barroca and Touriga Franca. With the homogenization of treatment periods, maturation and harvesting, the improvement of the efficiency of processes is clear, resulting in a more constant and controllable production and a higher cost-effective quality.Another determining factor concerning these new methods is the general analysis of the production that allows the elimination, when still green, of bunches of some grape varieties considered in excess. This process contributes to the enrichment of the quality of the remaining production.

The Quinta do Orgal, acquired in 2009, has about 40 ha. (98 ac.) of land in the Upper Douro, near Castelo Melhor and new vineyards are going to be planted there. This Quinta, facing the Douro River, has excellent conditions for the productions of grapes for table and Port wines.

Cellar
The new barrel cellar, built in 2009, combines the latest technology with a high quality architecture that makes this Quinta one of the places to visit in the Douro Valley.
