Caves Burmester
Largo da Ponte D. Luiz, 1, 4400-111, Vila Nova de Gaia - Porto and Douro
In 1750, Henry Burmester and John Nash started the exportation of
Port wines to Europe and England.
The new Burmester Museum Wine Cellars, built
in a privileged place overlooking the Douro River, besides the historic bridge
D. Luis I, emerge with the clear ambition of make known a little more of the
history of the brand Burmester.
In Detail
In 1750, just before the demarcation of the Douro wine region, the brand Burmester, producer of Port and Douro DOC wines, was born. The origins of the brand date back to London, in 1730, when Henry Burmester and John Nash founded Burmester& Nash. Currently, this brand belongs to Sogevinus, having acquired it in 2005.
Next to the bridge D. Luis I, the new Burmester visitor centre, could not have chosen a more privileged environment. The cellars, built in the end of the 18th century, kept the original architecture almost unchanged, with a darkened wooden beams ceiling and granite walls, greenish by the time, draining humidity; a water mine goes on inside.
The freshness we feel and light are, after all, the ideal conditions for a wine cellar, resembling cells, where Port wines are kept and where you can meet the first Burmester oak barrel, dated of 1883.
A small museum keeps some of the machines that were used for bottling, labelling and filling, taking us back to other times. You can always enjoy a Port wine tasting and the opportunity of walk through to the store that has a large selection of Burmester wines.
